I have mentioned chia seeds multiple times on Beautifully Gray, and I realized that I have never talked about what they are! So today, I want to talk about chia seeds and why I love them.
These awesome little seeds come from a desert plant called the Salvia hispanics. They originated in Central America and were consumed regularly by the Aztecs. (source: Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics).
We continue to eat them today because of their great health benefits! The major benefits include:
- Rich source of omega-3 fatty acids (a healthy, unsaturated fat)
- 5 grams of fiber per Tablespoon
- 3 grams of protein per Tablespoon
- Minerals such as iron, calcium, and magnesium
Chia seeds can be eaten raw or used in baked goods. The seeds are super absorbent, so they swell if soaked in a liquid (like in overnight oats). Some ways to eat chia seeds are in:
- Homemade granola
- Egg substitute in baked goods
Please be sure to eat chia seeds mixed in with other foods or sprinkled over top of a dish! Eating raw chia seeds alone are difficult to swallow since they grow so much in size.
